Above is a composite Google Earth shot of the desert 100 miles NE of Los Angeles showing a street pattern cleared for a proposed city to be called California City.
Atlas Obscura and BLDGBLOG are leading a trip out there to take photos during March, so if any of you are in that part of the world, you should definitely join in. Unfortunately I won't be, but I find the whole idea of this unprogrammed infrastructure for a place that never really existed fascinating. It also highlights the new opportunities for exploring the world opened up by new technology and sharing of information. You'll note for example that the non-city is tagged and searchable on GoogleMaps. I'll be digging a bit deeper, and I'll furnish you with my research when (if?) I get chance, but in the meantime, follow the 'join in' link above to let BLDGBLOG fill you in with a bit more info.
