I'm not sure from what angle I want to discuss this video. On the one hand, this seems a very persuasive argument, take a minuscule proportion of the value of every commercial banking transaction in the world, give it to the poor, give it a catchy name, Robin Hood Tax ahoy!
But then, at the same time, this kind of populist reactionary politik-ing by celebrities (this is another Richard Curtis vehicle. Yes, as in Four Weddings and a Funeral) can be horribly misinformed and ego driven. Just because he can say it in a film in a cogent and convincing way, doesn't mean it will work.
However, the basic concept, as made abundantly clear by the short above, seems hard to deny. There is undoubtedly a once in a generation opportunity here to take the global banking sector to task and realign the aspirations of the world to a socially responsible form of capitalism.
Does the world need another Bono? Maybe not, but it probably does need a financial solution. Cast your vote here while I make up my mind which button I'll press.
